Ukraine exported about 300,000 tons of vegetable oil in August, roughly half its typical monthly volume. A halt in sea exports cut off the country's main shipping route. Ukroliyaprom director general Stepan Kapshuk told NV Business about the drop on August 24.

Sea transport carried 86.5% of Ukraine's total agricultural exports in July. That share fell to 51.4% in the first half of August, according to Spike Brokers data reported by USM Media.
Why Sea Exports Have Stopped
Ukraine's oil exports depend almost entirely on sea shipping, and that route has narrowed sharply in August. The alternative routes are not enough.
Rail and Danube shipments have expanded to cover some of the gap, but neither has come close to matching sea capacity. Rail-borne grain exports fell 68% compared with July, according to Ukrzaliznytsia data cited by USM Media.
Western border rail crossings carried 126% more agricultural product in the same period, but that gain covered only a fraction of the lost sea volume.
Sunflower Purchase Prices Are Falling
Kapshuk said the bottleneck is in exporting finished oil, not in a shortage of raw sunflower. The squeeze has pushed down purchase prices for the crop.
Processors also face a shortage of transport and storage capacity, adding further pressure to the market.
Production Outlook and Recovery Timeline
Kapshuk expects the logistics problems to ease within two to three weeks. He also said annual oil production could reach 7 million tons this year. This is more than 20 times the roughly 300,000 tons Ukraine consumes each year domestically.
Ukroliyaprom does not expect a domestic shortage even as export volumes stay depressed.
