May Trade Data Sets a Monthly Export Record
May alone accounted for $54.18 billion of that total, the highest monthly figure ever recorded. That's up 17.5% from the $46.11 billion Mexico exported to the US in May 2025.
Mexico's Economy Ministry called the figure a "historic record for any month" in a statement accompanying the release.
Mexico's exports to the US rose in every period shown here compared to 2025. April posted the sharpest jump, climbing 21% from April 2025's $41.85 billion. May's $54.18 billion topped every prior month on record, even after the US imposed new tariffs on Mexican vehicles, steel, and aluminum over the past year.
Over the 12 months through May 2026, Mexico's exports to the US totaled $558 billion, up 8% year-over-year. Mexico's imports from the US over the same period reached $358.9 billion, up 7%.
USMCA Review Ends Without a 16-Year Extension
The report published six days after the United States, Mexico, and Canada held their mandatory six-year review of the USMCA, required under Article 34.7. On July 1, the US declined to confirm a fresh 16-year extension. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement that the United States "did not agree to renew the USMCA in its current form."
As a result, Greer said, the agreement is not being renewed. The agreement remains fully in force through 2036 unless a party formally withdraws, and the review now moves into a cycle of annual reviews.
The next round of bilateral talks between the US and Mexico is scheduled for the week of July 20 in Mexico City.
What's Driving Mexico's Export Growth
Mexico ships a wide range of goods to the US, including vehicles, auto parts, computers, medical devices, fresh food, and alcoholic beverages like beer and tequila. The bulk of that trade continues to move tariff-free under the USMCA.
That held even after the US imposed tariffs on Mexican vehicles, steel, aluminum, and goods not covered by the agreement over the past year.
